What is a Digital Business Strategy? And Why Do Associations Need One?

A 7-Step Evaluation Process.

What’s the first thing people do when they want to know more about a product or organization? They go to the website. It takes fewer than 30 seconds to make a first impression.  Today, an association’s website IS the association. And it’s open 24/7.

A digital business strategy is a roadmap to achieving an association’s business goals through the integrated use of an online platform (website, email, social media, mobile, etc.).   It is now a critical piece to an association’s overall business strategy.

Online tools can provide cost-effective distribution, unlimited reach, conversion efficiencies and exponential potential/return on investment.  They also work to support, promote and integrate with all of the other established channels of distribution, such as publications, events, education & certification, and research.  Online and other digital tools allow associations to measure, test, and adapt – quickly.

A quick 7-step evaluative process can determine where an association is in terms of starting, executing or evaluating its current digital business strategy. In the next blog, we will dive into these 7 steps in more detail:

  • Assessment of current placement in market
  • Build a data-driven plan
  • Develop strategies to build revenue (dues and non-dues)
  • Recognize that content is king
  • Reach more current members, and potential members, with specific audience development strategies
  • Develop email best practices (eNewsletters, promotional, feeds) to support audience development plan
  • Measure performance
